Today, October 10, 2023, is World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health Day takes place every year on October 10. This year’s theme is “Mental Health Is A Universal Human Right.” This concept emphasizes the necessity of assuring that everyone, regardless of age, socioeconomic class, or background, should have access to high-quality mental health care and support. It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation For Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries. World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to talk about mental health in a public and open way, challenge the stigma often associated with mental health problems, and promote positive mental health for everyone. Here are some actions you can take to mark this day:
1) Learn more about mental health. There are many resources available online and in your community that can teach you about mental health disorders and brain diseases, their causes, and their treatments.
2) Talk to your friends and family about mental health. The more we talk about mental health, the more we can help normalize it and reduce the associated stigma.
3) Support mental health organizations. Many organizations are working to promote mental health and support people with mental health problems. You can donate time, money, or both.
4) Take care of your own mental health. Ensure you sleep well, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and connect with loved ones. These are all things that can help to improve your mental well-being.
To have an international day devoted to mental health is terrifically supportive to those with a mental illness or brain disease. If you know someone living with a mental illness, mark this day by being incredibly kind to and patient with them.
