When struggling with a bad time for your mental health or your brain disorder, you can lose the desire to do what you enjoy. At those times, it’s as if a closed door separates me from where I can enjoy myself. It’s not always possible to snap out of such a feeling, but I have found that if I just begin to do what I usually love, the feeling of being shut out dissipates. For example, one of my favorite pastimes is listening to music. When struggling with my mental health, I can sometimes neglect this enjoyment out of pessimism that it won’t help me. By forcing myself to listen to some of my favorite recordings, the fun can come back, and I can build on that at my pace to re-discover the pleasure of listening to music.
