Medication or not?

I take medication to help control the symptoms of my schizophrenia, and it’s a suitable medication for me. However, it was a long road with a lot of support to reach where I am now. I had to pass through bad decisions about what I should take and unwelcome side effects. It even involved changing doctors to find one more attentive to my struggles with medication. My current medicines help attenuate my bad symptoms without curing them entirely. I need to take medication and lead a lifestyle that avoids triggering a relapse: together, these strategies give me hope and the quality of life I can enjoy. Attending support groups for mental health consumers taught me that each person’s medication story is unique. Therefore, I never discuss what medication I take, and I never criticize someone else’s approach, even if that approach involves taking no medication.
